Immigration and integration laws in Italy

11.06.2004

The bulk of the legislation that governs immigration and integration matters in Italy is the result of the conflation between two laws. The Single Act no. 286 of July 25th 1998, which was essentially based on Law no. 40 of March 6th 1998, called the Turco-Napolitano after the names of the then Centre-Left Government Ministers of Social Affairs and of the Interior and Law no. 189 of July 30th 2002, called the Bossi-Fini after the names of the two Vice Prime Ministers, respectively leaders of the Northern League and National Alliance. The new law on the immigration was passed, effective as of 10 September.
